The Power of English

every evening, Id walk the same time from home in Pouk Village the half kilometer to the pagoda to teach.. and when the local kids sussed out it was a routine they would stand and wait for me to pass and say 'hello teacher, HOW ARE YOU?' and then run away shy.. dam... they melt your heart... the best kids.. you cant believe how happy they make you feel.. all along the road and street

The red band on the girls wrist means she has been to the temple reasonably recently.., usually all Cambodians have a red band around their wrist. These people grow their food, the grow the meat and chickens.. they are completely communal and everyone knows everyone very very well you can bet on that… to spend a little time with these people in their world will leave you wondering who you are i promise you nothing will ever look the same again and your happiness will have a differant benchmark and need

Time and events have dictated English the global language.

For reasons of employment, education and communication is it crucial for people of the developed worlds to be skilled in at least functional English. Learning English dos not usually come free and westerners with whom to practice ‘speaking and listening,’ are hard to find for the local people. School environments vary greatly from in a coffee shops to school rooms in universities and huge Pagoda compounds. There are distinctions between schools that include, government or private learning systems, adherence to cultural tradition, costs and quality.

The Monks were special people. I always felt safe around them despite some of them always having a question ready designed to trip me up. Lot of fun :)

The Monks were special people. I always felt safe around them despite some of them always having a question ready designed to trip me up. Lot of fun 🙂 Volunteer school in Pagoda Compound. Students pay a little of course the Monks dont have to pay for English lessons.., or they dont pay for anything actually, they need very little. Thats the point.

Students understand the importance of learning English, it’s their motivating force. It is extremely rare a student doesn’t know the reason he/she is learning English. For these reasons and more, generally people in developing worlds love learning English and teachers are highly respected and treated with huge warmth.

There are schools that require a ‘small’ amount of money. $20 for three months might be a lot for some local/rural families to find as a one time payment for English lessons.

Schools that are free for students can be hugely differant from a rural orphanage to a bar in the tourist areas dedicated to the children

Crazy Kim's English School, Nha Trang VietNam. Free for students and a very sepcial place where a very strong bond exists between teachers and students. Students take the teachers to the coffee shops and all sorts of events; eg, drinking snakes blood, picnics. fishing.., Kim's school has been going f or over a decade,. Anyone can volunteer to teach there. It is self regulating and very safe. Extremely safe.

of the streets. Crazy Kims Bar in Nha Trang, Vietnam has held free English lessons for over a decade. Its a special place where all the students and teachers have an incredibly strong bonds.

School rooms vary greatly. In an enviroment where the students ahev paid even a little they will expect a lot of professioanlism. The teacher will be volunteer but professionalism should still maintained.

The students in these situations have paid and generally more demanding of a real school environment. None the less the teacher is voluntary and might find the attitudes a little surprising if they had experience with the easy-going attitudes of students in teaching free education.

This is the classroom in the Pagoda compound in Pouk Village. Here the students paid a little money for their English Lessons but it still may of been difficult for many.

Teaching in these situations can be a little confronting and demanding but it’s no biggy and great fun. The students always maintain tones of respect and if you let them make you part of a family. Common sense and professionalism might also prevail, it IS Asia?!

there is a strong need fpr professionalism in private schools as you can see here. Private school in the suburbs of Siem Reap

there is a need for professionalism in private schools.

The private schools that demand real money are a step into a more clinical world where tradition has a strong influence over the whole school. Formality is maintained until the appropriate length of time has passed and there is a friendly and professional understanding between the teachers. The students are eager to learn, friendly and extremely respectful. Professionalism must be strictly maintained at all time. Its normal to come up against issues of culture in developing countries.  I have my own ways of dealing with them i have learnt over the years and i suggest you tread carefully. The children are children and incredible to be around and at this school in the suburbs of Siem Reap it was 400 hi5s a days and as many, ‘HELLO TEACHER, HOW ARE YOU??’

Its not unusual to find schools in the pagoda compounds in Cambodia. Traditionally schools were in Pagodas.
